NDC Properties in RxNorm

چکیده
Motivation The National Drug Code (NDC) is a universal product identifier for human drugs in the United States. NDCs can be found on drug packaging and are listed on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Structured Product Labels (SPLs). NDCs are used by pharmacists for inventory management and for drug information exchange, as well as in claims data. From a clinical perspective, however, NDCs are too detailed (e.g., packaging information) and need to be mapped to clinical drugs or ingredients (e.g., for medication reconciliation). It is therefore not surprising that the most used query from users in the RxNorm Application Program Interface (API) [https://rxnav.nlm.nih.gov/RxNormAPIs.html] is to map NDCs to the corresponding RxNorm concepts. RxNorm currently contains over 200,000 NDCs, most of which come from SPLs and the rest from First Data Bank. However, until recently, the RxNorm API did not expose the properties associated with NDC (extracted from SPLs). The new API function described here now provides this information.

Managing terminology change for clinical medications in the Learning Health System
While preparing ontology metadata for a reload of our i2b2 data warehouse, we discovered many EHR records with instances of RxNorm and NDC codes that could not be found in UMLS, in the current version of RxNorm or in the FDA National Drug Code Directory. Exploring the editorial policies of the FDA and NLM, we determined that RxNorm and NDC releases only reflect codes for drugs currently in use ...
متن کاملApproaches to Supporting the Analysis of Historical Medication Datasets with RxNorm
OBJECTIVE To investigate approaches to supporting the analysis of historical medication datasets with RxNorm. METHODS We created two sets of National Drug Codes (NDCs). One is based on historical NDCs harvested from versions of RxNorm from 2007 to present. The other comprises all sources of NDCs in the current release of RxNorm, including proprietary sources. We evaluated these two resources ...
متن کاملEvaluating the implementation of RxNorm in ambulatory electronic prescriptions
OBJECTIVE RxNorm is a standardized drug nomenclature maintained by the National Library of Medicine that has been recommended as an alternative to the National Drug Code (NDC) terminology for use in electronic prescribing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the implementation of RxNorm in ambulatory care electronic prescriptions (e-prescriptions). METHODS We analyzed a random sample ...
متن کاملRxNorm Concept History Service
Motivation RxNorm contains drug concepts which represent the currently marketed drugs in the U.S. With each monthly RxNorm release, new drug products are added and obsolete drug products are removed. While this curation supports e-prescribing and drug information exchange use cases, it is detrimental to analytics use cases. The issue in this case is that some of the RxNorm drug identifiers (RxC...

For analyzing prescription datasets, usually one wishes to identify drugs by classes, rather than by U.S. FDANational Drug Codes. We demonstrate how to utilize the NLM RxNorm online API to map NDCs to WHOAnatomical-Therapeutic-Chemical classes, and present statistics and caveats of mapping 71,309 NDCs found inMedicare Part D claims from 2006 to 2013 and 134,580 NDCs found in a c...
